With “Inside Llewyn Davis” hitting theaters soon and a TV
show based on “Fargo” coming next year we thought it would be a good idea to
reflect on the Coen brothers and their characters. All of them are pretty
colorful and can have doctoral dissertations written about them but we chose to
take one of our favorite characters and write a piece on them.
Tom chose Anton Chigurh from “No Country for Old Men” and I
chose Walter Sobchak from “The Big Lebowski”. Both of them are interesting
characters in their own right, and with the analysis we did on them we
discovered stuff we didn’t even know about them.
The Coens have such a style that practically demands each
and every one of their characters be given proper development in the story no
matter what their screen time is. But even so the characters cannot be
represented fully in a 2 hour movie which is where we come in. It seems
pointless to analyze characters that are so vivid and entertaining but doing it
is very satisfying.
